Nitrification is a biological process that converts ammonia (NH3) to nitrate (NO3–) via the intermediary nitrite (NO2–). It is an essential step in the nitrogen cycle, playing a crucial role in plant nutrition and soil health. Nitrification is carried out by two main groups of microorganisms: ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB).
