  2. What did Bose’s mother do when he brought his friends home from school?
  3. Who was Lafont? How did he influence Bose?
  4. Why did Bose refuse to accept his salary?

Answer

  1. Jagadish Bose received his early education in a Vernacular school because his father believed that one must know their mother tongue before learning any other language. His father also emphasized the importance of knowing one’s own people.
  2. When Bose brought his friends home from school, his mother welcomed and fed all of them without discrimination. She treated them equally, regardless of their backgrounds or social status.
  3. Lafont refers to Jesuit Father Eugene Lafont. He played a significant role in developing Bose’s interest in natural science. Lafont was a teacher at St. Xavier’s School in Calcutta, where Bose came in contact with him. It was under Lafont’s guidance and influence that Bose’s interest in natural science grew.
  4. Bose refused to accept his salary at Presidency College as a sign of protest. He was not provided facilities for research and was offered a lower salary than his European colleagues. His refusal to accept the salary was a demonstration of his remarkable sense of self-respect and national pride, highlighting the unequal treatment he faced compared to his European counterparts. Eventually, after his protest, he was offered a permanent teaching post.
