The topic is debatable. If the answer is ‘yes’, the immediate response would be, where was He when alive? If it is no, the response would be, where is He?

The faith in God’s existence is the cornerstone (= the main foundation stone) of all religions. Philosophers have discarded Buddhism as religion because it denies God. Again Communism, too, does not believe in God. On the other hand the science of theology is built upon the proposition that God exists.

Be it as it may, this great human civilisation fosters itself on a firm belief that there is God. In its remotest ancient phase men worshipped Him as a power supreme. Good or bad, it was His will that prevailed. He was sometimes benign (= willing good), sometimes malign (= willing evil). Men submitted to his misery or wretchedness as God’s will. It gave then endurance in suffering.

With time the human wisdom become more rife (= mature). Preacher, sages, scientists and savants established the truth that God is not a blind and wilful power. The entire creation is His gift and all created objects – animate and inanimate – are products of His love.

The feeling today that God is dead indicates a spiritual crisis. Science, today, has made remarkable strides (= progress). Through the spread of knowledge even a common man, today, has realized that the majority of our woes or misfortunes are due to our ignorance. Formerly we used to think that the calamities (= disasters) of epidemics, earthquakes, landslides or sea-storms were visitations (= fearful appearances) of an angry God. But today we know better.

But inspite of our chastened (= purified) knowledge, inspite of science and her assurance of a better life, the question if God is dead assails our mind. Tragic suffering or Dukkha ever remains with us and we have to share it. It often puts our faith in God, the great Saviour, in doubt. The great Gautam, the Buddha, sought an explanation, quitting (= rejecting) his life of pelf (= wealth) and pleasure.

God is never dead. It is synonymous (= is identical) with Faith. It is to be felt, not seen. Not through a life of sensuous (born of the senses) pleasure, as they divert the human soul into a self-seeking life. Truly devout (= religious minded) souls sacrifice earthly joys.

The greatest scientists even have realized that science can never unravel (= discover) the ultimate mystery of this Great Universe.

Our greatest crisis ought to make us search within ourselves.

The great discoveries, whether it is in the field of science or in the world of spirit, have been made by men who have pondered (= thought) within their own selves.

To conclude, therefore, the question of God’s existence is a patent one. Especially today it disturbs us, because the religious creeds and practices have become vitiated/polluted by greed and its offshoots. Today the real saint calls us to knock within and to cultivate the spiritual values in our personal life and thinking. God is never dead.
