Answer

A reducing agent (reductant) is a substance that loses electrons and gets oxidized in a chemical reaction.

(a) 4NH₃ + 5O₂ → 4NO + 6H₂O

  • Reducing Agent: NH₃ (Ammonia)
  • Reason: NH₃ loses hydrogen and gets oxidized to NO.

(b) H₂O + F₂ → HF + HOF

  • Reducing Agent: H₂O (Water)
  • Reason: H₂O donates electrons (loses hydrogen) and gets oxidized to HOF.

(c) Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂

  • Reducing Agent: CO (Carbon Monoxide)
  • Reason: CO loses electrons and gets oxidized to CO₂ while reducing Fe₂O₃ to Fe.

(d) 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O

  • Reducing Agent: H₂ (Hydrogen)
  • Reason: H₂ donates electrons (loses hydrogen) and gets oxidized to H₂O.

Summary Table:

(b) H₂O + F₂ → HF + HOFH₂O
(c) Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂CO
(d) 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂OH₂
