Vasudev Balvant Phadke was born in a Brahmin family of Ratnagiri (Maharashtra) on 4 November, 1845. Contact with nationalist leaders like Mahadev Govind Ranade and others influenced him in his early days to fight for the cause of freedom. But soon, he was attracted towards militancy. He was fired by revolutionary zeal and killed many a Britisher in guerilla activities.

Phadke is remembered with great respect among those who tried to respond to British tyranny and oppression with revolutionary fervor rather than with non-violence. In fact, he believed that non-violence was not the effective way to freedom. In 1879, he was tried and sentenced to imprisonment on the charge of anti-government activities. The inhuman treatment meted out to him in jail and the torture he was subjected to told upon him. Badly broken in physical health, Phadke died in jail on 17th February 1883.

Phadke holds a significant place in the annals of India’s freedom struggle for his tactics of guerilla warfare. He collected young men with fervor for freedom and organised them so efficiently that the British government had to be always on the alert to fend for a surprise attack from any quarters — imaginable or unimaginable.

Phadke was an ideal revolutionary and a patriot of first water. He will always’ hold a high place in the annals of India’s history.
