Mahaprabhu Chaitanya was born in February.1486 at Nawadweep in Bengal. His parents were very religious-minded persons. Chaitanya’s original name was Vishwambhar and he was nick-named He was also called ‘Gawang’ meaning ‘black’ because of his dark color. His parents did not want him to study much as they feared he might renounce the world.

Chaitanya got an opportunity to study Sanskrit and its grammar. This enabled his intellectual capacity to come to the forefront. He was married to Laxmi, the daughter of a learned priest, but she died of snakebite and he married Vishnupriya. A great change came over him at twenty-two and he renounced the world. His life now took a complete turn.

Chaitanya completely immersed himself in the worship of Lord Krishna by singing kirtan. His singing group became part and parcel of Bengali life. He gave a new turn to the religious fervor in Bengal. His area of influence increased considerably because he was good to his detractors also.

He went to Puri where he attracted the masses to his philosophy. He went to south India in 1510 and then traveled western India.

He attracted people to his religious beliefs wherever he went. He went to pilgrimage again in 1513 and traveled entire of North India in 1515. Thereafter for the next 18 years, he remained in Puri. He was a follower of Radha-Krishan and gave a new direction to the Vaishnava religion in Navadweep (Bengal), Puri (Orissa), and Brindavan (Uttar Pradesh). Throughout his life, he was immersed in religious activities, and will always be remembered for it.
