Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre has a special place in the Indian film industry. Apart from being a producer-director, he also acted in a few films. His contribution to the Indian film industry is immeasurable. Saavkari Paash was his first film. Social order, exploitation, music, and dance were his forte. He also produced a documentary on Cripps’ mission. He was a pioneer in many an improvement in film production. He was the first to introduce ‘talkies’, moving away from the silent era, the first to use a zoom lens, first to produce a children’s film, and the first to produce a color film in the country. Maya Bazaar, 1923; Dr. Kotnis KiAmar Kahani, 1946; Admi, 1939, Shakuntala,1943; Jhanak-Jhanak Payal Baaze, 1955; Geet Gaya Pathoron Ne, 1964; Boond Jo Ban Gaye Moti, 1967; Chaani, 1977 are some of his immortal films.
Shantaram was born on 18 November 1901 at Kolhapur in Maharashtra in a poor family. He had to do odd jobs to earn a livelihood even in childhood. But he attained success with his struggle and efforts. He formed the Prabhat Film Company in 1929. He was immortalized by Netaji Palkar, Gopal Krishna, and Duniya Naa Mane. He came to Bombay in 1941 and established the Rajkamal Kala Mandir Studio.
For his immense contribution to the film world, he was awarded the `Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1986. He died on 27 October 1990.
