Pandit Birju Maharaj is a celebrated Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and music composer. He is considered to be one of the most renowned figures in the Kathak dance tradition, which originated in northern India. He is also known for his skill in teaching and promoting the dance form.
Maharaj was born in 1938 in New Delhi, India. His grandfather and father were both Kathak dancers and music teachers, and they trained him in the art form from a young age. He began performing professionally at the age of seven and quickly established himself as a leading Kathak dancer.
In addition to his performing career, Maharaj has also been a dedicated teacher and has trained many students in the Kathak tradition. He has also choreographed and composed music for various productions and films.
