Parkash Singh Badal is a former Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of the state of Punjab for five terms between 1970 and 2017. He is a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a regional political party in Punjab.
Badal was born in Abul Khurana, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan) on December 8, 1927. He began his political career in the 1950s as a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, a regional political party in Punjab that advocates for the rights and interests of the Sikh community in the state.
He first served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1970 to 1971 and then again from 1977 to 1980 and 1997 to 2002 and 2007 to 2017. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he implemented a number of development projects in the state and made efforts to improve the agricultural sector, education and infrastructure in the state.
Badal is also known for his role in promoting the Punjabi language and culture, and he was a strong advocate for the rights of the Sikh community. He also played a major role in the movement for the state of Punjab to have its own Punjabi-speaking capital city, and the city of Chandigarh was chosen as the capital of Punjab and Haryana.
Badal has also been a Member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, and he has also held the position of Union Minister in the Government of India.
He retired from active politics in 2017 and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also a member of the SAD, took over as the Chief Minister of Punjab.
