Sonia Gandhi is an Indian politician who has served as the President of the Indian National Congress, one of the two major political parties in India, since 1998. She was born Sonia Maino on December 9, 1946, in Lusiana, Italy. She met Rajiv Gandhi, the son of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, while studying at Cambridge University. They married in 1968 and moved to India, where Rajiv became a member of the Indian National Congress and eventually the Prime Minister of India.
Sonia Gandhi has not held any official government position, but she has been an influential figure in the Indian political landscape. After her husband’s assassination in 1991, she was persuaded to enter politics by members of the Congress party, and she became the party’s president in 1998.
Under her leadership, the Congress party won a surprise victory in the 2004 general elections, and she was instrumental in the formation of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, with her party as the lead party.
She has been active in various social and charitable causes such as, empowering women, promoting secularism and supporting the rights of socially and economically marginalized sections of society. She has also actively supported the cause of farmers and labourers.
