Salim Ali was an Indian ornithologist and naturalist. He is considered to be the “father of Indian ornithology” and was one of the most prominent figures in the study of birds in India. He was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1896 and died in 1987. He was educated at Bombay University and later at Cambridge University in England.

Salim Ali began his career as a research assistant at the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), where he worked for many years. He later served as the Honorary Director of the BNHS and as the Chairman of the Indian Board for Wildlife.

He made many significant contributions to the field of ornithology in India, including the discovery of several new bird species, and the publication of several books and papers on Indian birds. He also worked to promote conservation of bird habitats in India and played a key role in the formation of the Indian National Committee for the International Council for Bird Preservation.

He received many awards and honors throughout his life, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, two of India’s highest civilian awards, and the Linnean Gold Medal from the Linnean Society of London.
