Elon Musk is a South African-born American entrepreneur and business magnate. He is the CEO, founder and chief engineer/designer of SpaceX; early investor, CEO and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; and founder of The Boring Company. He was also co-founder and initial co-chairman of OpenAI, a research company that promotes friendly artificial intelligence. Musk’s goals have been to reduce global warming through sustainable energy production and consumption, and to reduce the risk of human extinction by setting up a human colony on Mars.
Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. He showed an early interest in computers and technology, and taught himself computer programming at the age of 12. He went on to study physics and business at the University of Pretoria and later, moved to Canada aged 17 to attend Queen’s University. He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics. He moved on to Stanford University but decided instead to pursue a business career, co-founding web software company Zip2 with his brother, which helped bring online news to newspapers, and eventually, was sold for almost $300 million in cash.
In 2002, Musk founded SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company, of which he is CEO, lead designer, and engineer. In 2004, he helped create Tesla, Inc., an electric vehicle and clean energy company, serving as CEO, product architect and chairman. In the following years, Musk co-founded SolarCity, OpenAI, and The Boring Company.
He has been involved in several other ventures, mostly in the areas of transportation, such as the Hyperloop, a high-speed vactrain transportation system, and tunnel construction company the Boring Company. Musk has proposed the Hyperloop, a vactrain high-speed transportation system; and has proposed the construction of a tunnel for the Hyperloop. He is also a co-founder of Neuralink, a neurotechnology company to integrate the human brain with AI.
Musk is known for making bold statements and ambitious promises, often setting aggressive deadlines for the completion of projects but has also seen some major successes, such as Falcon 1 becoming the first privately developed liquid fuel rocket to reach orbit and the first privately funded company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station.
