Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (CV Raman) was an Indian physicist who was born on November 7, 1888, in Tiruchirapalli, India (now in Tamil Nadu, India). He is best known for his discovery of the Raman effect, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The Raman effect is the inelastic scattering of a photon, where the photon loses energy and the scattered photon has a different wavelength. This discovery was made by Raman while working at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Calcutta (now Kolkata).

Raman studied physics at the Presidency College in Madras (now Chennai), and later at the University of Calcutta, where he received his master’s degree in 1907. In 1917, he was appointed as the first Palit Professor of Physics at the University of Calcutta, a position he held until his retirement in 1948. During his career, he also served as the Director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, as well as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.

In addition to his work on the Raman effect, Raman made significant contributions to the fields of acoustics, optics, and solid-state physics. He also established the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore, which continues to be an important center for research in India to this day. Raman passed away on November 21, 1970, in Bangalore, India.
