Mother Teresa, also known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was a Catholic nun and missionary who is best known for her humanitarian work in the slums of Calcutta, India. She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, now the capital of North Macedonia, but then part of the Ottoman Empire.
At the age of 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish congregation of nuns with missions in India. She was sent to Calcutta, India, where she began teaching at St. Mary’s High School for Girls, but she soon felt a calling to serve the poorest of the poor and to devote herself to a life of service to the poor and sick.
In 1948, she received permission to leave her religious congregation and the school and began a new ministry dedicated to serving the “poorest of the poor” in the slums of Calcutta. She established the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor, which later expanded to over 130 countries.
Throughout her life, Mother Teresa was known for her selfless service and her compassion for the poor and sick. She was honored with numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, in Calcutta, India. After her death, she was beatified by the Catholic Church, which is the first step towards canonization or being declared a saint. She was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016. Mother Teresa continues to be an inspiration for her selfless work, compassion, and devotion to serving the poor and downtrodden.
