Raja Ram Mohan Roy was a prominent Indian social reformer and a key figure in the Indian Renaissance during the British Raj. He was born in 1772 in Bengal and was a polymath, who excelled in various fields such as literature, journalism, education, and religious reform. He was a strong advocate of the abolition of the practice of sati, the burning of widows on their husband’s funeral pyre, and worked tirelessly to bring about its end through his writings and lobbying of the British government. He also campaigned for the rights of women and advocated for the education of girls. He was a strong supporter of Indian culture and heritage and sought to promote its study and understanding. He was a founding member of the Brahmo Sabha, which later became the Brahmo Samaj, a religious reform movement which aimed to promote monotheism and the rejection of idol worship. He passed away in 1833 and is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in modern Indian history.
