Like every creation, nature also thrives on balance, and every creation again, she suffers temporary imbalance. This, like in fact, is the law of creation the variety and multiplicity, which / that is the chief exponent (=that which expresses) of life on this earth. This is chiefly the result of a beautiful shift: a shift off the poise and a restoration. Shakespeare brilliantly sums it up in a line in a sea-metaphor: ‘Restoring loss with gain and gain with loss’.

But there are upheavals in nature, causing disasters. Abnormal ocean and river floods; sea-storms, so sudden and powerful that they take coastal towns unawares; great earthquakes or volcanic explosions that crumble towers and civilizations. Their visits are few and far between, but of alarming proportions. Man, nay, science has largely redressed (=set right) the problems. It has devised means by which we are able to apprehend the disaster well in advance; means by which we are able roughly to locate the vulnerable (=likely to be attacked) spots. Naturally the preventive and protective measures have been able to stem the rot (=prevent the extent of damage).

But unfortunately, that is not all. Today the unprecedented march of science and man’s headstrong concept of political chicanery (=deceptive dealings) have created problems progress and where there was none. In the most literal sense–as never before – we are raising the Frankenstein (=the all-powerful giant of a scientist who, ultimately, falls a prey to its strength and lethal character) that threatens to kill us. Reckless felling of trees in the hills for decades has landed us into a pickle (=difficult situation). Landslides have increased and an unforeseen ecological imbalance is staring us in the face. In the plains this poses a similar problem and have resulted in a diaspora (=dispersal) in the animal world. Again the heavy urbanizations, today, flood the cities and the towns with auto-vehicles of all possible description. They emit petrol or diesel gases that affect us adversely, as there is not the equivalent greenery to set off its bad effect.

These may be termed ‘artificial’ or man-made disasters. include in the list the rockets that flit through the ozone We may layers and rupture the prophylactic (-guarding against evil effects) Cover that protects our earth. These, too, are man-made. But are they really so and disconnected with nature? No, on the ‘contrary they rake up nature’s wrath. We now realize brutally that nature is a living phenomenon. Nature, life and the earth are bound in an eternal bond of mutual love and respect.

However, things have improved. The world over scientists, humanists and philanthropists are conscious of this tie with nature. There is a growing awareness to understand nature and to avert natural disasters.

Earth, air, water or the five elements of the ether, water, heat, wind and sky according to the Indian calculation are always in a state of flux (-changing relationship). Natural disasters are inevitable and man shall always have to brace it with courage and understanding.
