Question – 1 :

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

It is always lovely on the Big Half Moon in summer. When it is fine, the harbour is blue and calm, with little wind and ripples. Every summer, we had some hobby. The last summer before Dick and Mimi came, we were crazy about kites. A boy on the mainland showed Claude how to make them. Back on the island, we made plenty of kites. Claude would go around to the other side of the island, and we would play shipwrecked mariners signaling to each other with kites.

We had a kite that was big and covered with lovely red paper. We pasted gold tinsel stars all over it and had written our names full on it—Claude Leete and Philippa Leete, Big Half Moon lighthouse.

One day, there was a grand wind for kite-flying. I’m not sure how it happened, but as I was bringing the kite from the house, I tripped and fell over the rocks. My elbow went clear through the kite, making a big hole. We had to hurry to fix the kite if we wanted to send it up before the wind fell. We rushed into the lighthouse to get some paper. We knew there was no more red paper. We took the first thing that came handy—an old letter lying on the bookcase in the sitting room. We patched the kite up with the letter, a sheet on each side, and dried it by the fire. We started out, and up went the kite like a bird. The wind was glorious, and it soared. All at once—snap! And there was Claude, standing with a bit of cord in his hand, looking foolish. Our kite had sailed away over to the mainland.

Question – 3 :

Kolkata: The forest department has started conducting guided nature education trips for school and college students at the revamped Banabitan in Salt Lake. Two zones—a bird zone and a mini Jaldapara zone have been set up where models of different animals have been set up along with information boards of different animals, including both mammals and reptiles and also birds for students to have first-hand information on the forest biodiversity and ecosystem.

Student groups from some schools have already taken part in the nature walks which have started from mid-January onwards. “It is a kind of nature and wildlife study for students in the midst of an urban forest pocket. The atmosphere of a real forest has been recreated with different kinds of trees and the feel of a real forest area has been developed with miniature animal models like elephants, deer, rhinos, and others at different spots within the specified zone,” said a forest department official.

Arjan Basu Roy, secretary of Natures Mates, an NGO which is assisting the forest department on this guided nature walk for students at Banabitan, said that it was an encouraging initiative by the forest department for students to have a good idea of forest biodiversity. “Banabitan has its own rich biodiversity, flora, and fauna. Such guided nature walks will help children to know about such a natural biodiversity, and they will be more enthusiastic to come forward to preserve nature,” Roy said.

There are introductory boards of various animals and birds along with their species and details along with walkways in the bird zone and mini Jaldapara zone. The students are being guided by a forest department official. Each nature walk is being conducted for about one-and-a-half hours to two hours.

The forest department minister said that more trees are to be planted in Banabitan, with stress on growing sandalwood trees. “We are bringing red and white sandalwood plants from states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu,” the minister said. Already various kinds of fruit and other trees have been planted as part of the revamp plan. The minister also added that similar to Banabitan, the forest department was working on plans to set up “Nagar Vatika Bon” or small urban forest pockets in various places, which could be developed on 10 hectares of space.
