Question

A body of mass 500 g, initially at rest, is acted upon by a force which causes it to move a distance of 4 m in 2 s. Calculate the force applied.

Answer

Mass (m) = 500 g or 0.5 kg

Initial velocity (u) = 0

Displacement (s) = 4 m

Time (t) =  s

we know,

S = ut + (1/2) at2

⇒ 4 = 0 × 2 + (1/2) × a × 22

⇒ (1/2) × a × 22 = 4

⇒ 2 × a = 4

⇒ a = 4/2 = 2 m s -2

Now,

Force (F) = mass (m) × acceleration (a)

= 0.5 × 2 = 1 N

Hence, the Magnitude of force = 1 N
