Question

A car moving on a straight path covers a distance of 1 km due east in 100 s. What is (i) the speed and (ii) the velocity of car ?

Answer

(i) Distance travelled (S) = 1 km = 1000 m,

time (t) = 100 s

Speed = 1000 / 100 = 10 m s-1

Hence, the speed of the car is 10 m s-1

(ii) The magnitude of the velocity of the car is the same as that of the speed of the car i.e., 10 m s-1

However, when we talk about velocity, we mention direction also.

Hence, the velocity of the car is 10 m s-1 due east.
