Prafulla Chandra Roy, born in 1861 in Khulna (now in Bangladesh), was a renowned Indian scientist. He received his early education at a village Pathsala and later attended Hare School and Albert School. After passing the Entrance examination in 1879, he pursued his F.A. from Metropolitan College in 1882. Prafulla Chandra Roy’s academic brilliance earned him the prestigious Gilchrist scholarship in 1882, which led him to London. He obtained his B.Sc. from Edinburgh University (1882-84) and went on to earn a D.Sc. from the same university. In 1889, he became a Professor at Presidency College, Kolkata. Notably, Prafulla Chandra Roy was the first scientist to successfully prepare Mercurous Nitrite in a laboratory in 1896. In 1901, he established Bengal Chemicals, making significant contributions to the field of chemistry. Later, he joined Science College as the Palit Professor. Prafulla Chandra Roy’s impactful career in science came to an end with his demise in 1944.
