Rhizobium
Explanation
Rhizobium is a genus of bacteria that fix nitrogen. Nitrogen fixation is the process of converting nitrogen gas from the atmosphere into ammonia, which can be used by plants to make proteins and other essential molecules. Rhizobium bacteria live in symbiosis with legumes, such as peas, beans, and soybeans. The bacteria infect the roots of the legumes and form nodules, where they fix nitrogen and provide it to the plant.
