QQuestion

Copy and complete the nuclear reaction by filling in the blanks.

{}_{92}^{235}U+{}_{0}^{1}n\longrightarrow{}_{56}^{\ldots}Ba+{}_{\ldots}^{92}Kr+3{}_{0}^{1}n

Exam-ready answer 02 Mark

Answer

As only neutrons are involved in the reaction, the number of protons and total nucleon number remain constant.

Initially, number of protons = 92 and number of nucleons = 235 + 1 = 236.

Let the atomic number of Kr be Z and the mass number of Ba be A.

92 = 56 + Z, so Z = 36.

236 = A + 92 + 3, so A = 141.

Therefore,

{}_{92}^{235}U+{}_{0}^{1}n\longrightarrow{}_{56}^{141}Ba+{}_{36}^{92}Kr+3{}_{0}^{1}n
