Question

Which environmental problems arise if nitrogen cycle is hampered?

WBBSE Class X Life Science 05 (a) Nitrogen 02 Mark 2025

Answer

If the nitrogen cycle is hampered, the following environmental problems may arise:

  1. Loss of soil fertility – Proper conversion among nitrogenous compounds (NH₄⁺, NO₂⁻, NO₃⁻) is disturbed, so plants cannot absorb enough usable nitrogen, leading to poor plant growth and reduced crop yield.
  2. Water pollution and eutrophication – Excess nitrogen compounds may accumulate in water bodies, cause algal bloom and depletion of dissolved oxygen, leading to death of aquatic organisms.
