QQuestion

Arrange the following according to the instructions given in brackets:

(a) C2H2, C3H6, CH4, C2H4 (In the increasing order of the molecular weight)

(b) Cu2+, Na+, Zn2+, Ag+ (The order of Preferential discharge at the cathode)

Exam-ready answer 02 Mark

Answer

(a) Molecular weight of C2H2 = 2[12] + 2[1] = 26

Molecular weight of C3H6 = 3[12] + 6[1] = 42

Molecular weight of CH4 = 12 + 4[1] = 16

Molecular weight of C2H4 = 2[12] + 4[1] = 28

Hence, increasing order of molecular weights is :

CH4 < C2H2 < C2H4 < C3H6

(b) Ag+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Na+
