Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. He showed an early interest in computers and technology, and taught himself to program using a program called BASIC on a computer his parents purchased for him. He attended Lakeside School in Seattle and later, Harvard University, but dropped out to start Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen.
Microsoft was initially a small company that created computer languages for the Altair 8800, one of the first personal computers. It quickly grew in size and reputation, and by the 1980s, Microsoft’s operating system, MS-DOS, was the dominant operating system for personal computers.
