Maharaja Sir Flt Lt Milkha Singh, commonly known as Milkha Singh, is a former Indian track and field athlete, who was born on October 20, 1935, in Govindpura, British India (now Pakistan). He is considered one of the greatest Indian athletes of all time and has achieved many notable accomplishments in his career.

Singh began competing in athletics at a young age, and quickly made a name for himself as a talented sprinter. He represented India at the 1958 Asian Games, where he won the gold medal in the 200m and 400m events. He went on to represent India in the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he narrowly missed out on a medal in the 400m event, finishing fourth.

Singh is also known for his military service. He was commissioned as a officer in Indian Army and served in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. During his service, he continued to compete in athletics and also won the title of ‘Services Sports Control Board’s ‘Best Athlete of the Year’ in 1965.

Singh received numerous awards for his contribution to Indian sports, including the Padma Shri in 1959, the Arjuna Award in 1960 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991 by the Government of India. He is also a recipient of India’s highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan in 2001. He retired from active competition in 1966 and has since worked as a sports administrator and promoter of sports in India. His story was also depicted in Bollywood movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which was a commercial success and critically acclaimed.
