Mukesh was gifted with a smooth voice that touched the chords of the listener’s heart instantly. Together with it, his voice had an undefinable sad tone that won him millions of admirers. Most of his songs carved a niche in peoples’ hearts and he will be long remembered for his humane nature and artistic attainments.
Mukesh Chandra Mathur was born in Delhi on July 22, 1923. He was introduced to the film world by the natural actor Moti Lal. Mukesh wanted to be a hero and actor and acted in films like Nirdosh, Malhar, Anurag, and Mashuka. In 1945, he sang for the film Pehli Nazar. His song Dil Jalta hai to Jane de brought him instantaneous encomiums from the followers of film music. People even said that a new Saigal was born in the Hindi film music world. He sang for Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal and Aag. He sang his last song for Satyarn Shivwn Sundaram.
Mukesh had sung most of the songs for Raj Kapoor and Manoj Kumar. Music director duo Shankar-Jaikishan and Kalyanji-Anandji provided the tunes for his smooth voice. He died on August 27, 1976, in the US while he was on a concert tour. Raj Kapoor lamented on his death that though he was the physical body, Mukesh remained his conscience and voice. Mukesh won international popularity and got the ‘Filmfare Award’ four times.
Mukesh sang thousands of numbers. The most popular amongst them are Dil Jalta Hai (Pehli Nazar), and Jinda hun is torah (Aag). Awaara hun (Awaara), Mera Joota hai Japani (Shri. 420), Dost dost na raha (Sangam), Chandan sa Badan (Saraswati Chandra) Kahin door jab din dhal jaye (Arland), Jane kahan gaye woh din (Mera Nam Joker), Ek pyar ke nagma hai (Shor), Suhana safar aur yeh mausam haseen (Madhurnati), Jis dil mein basa tha pyar tera (Saheli), Kayi bar yun bhi dekha hai ( Rajnigandha) for their sweet and sad rendition.
