Tenzing Norgay (also known as Sherpa Tenzing) was a Nepalese sherpa mountaineer. He was born in 1914 in the village of Tengboche in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal and grew up in a Sherpa community in the Khumbu region of the Himalayas. Norgay began working as a porter in his teens and quickly became an experienced mountaineer.

In the 1930s, Norgay began working as a high-altitude porter for various British and Swiss climbing expeditions in the Himalayas, including the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay. The achievement made him world-famous.

Norgay participated in several other expeditions to climb Mount Everest in the following years, including a Swiss expedition in 1956 and an American expedition in 1963 but was unsuccessful in reaching the summit. He retired from climbing in 1963, but remained active in the climbing community, working as a guide and a lecturer.

Norgay was honored with numerous awards and medals throughout his life, including the George Medal from the British government, the Legion of Honor from the French government, and the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographic Society. He passed away in 1986 in Darjeeling, India. His legacy and achievement are still remembered, his son Jamling Tenzing Norgay is also a Mountaineer and continues his legacy.
