Question

A body, initially at rest, starts moving with a constant acceleration 2 m s -2. Calculate – (i) the velocity acquired and (ii) and the distance travelled in 5 s.

Answer

As we know, from the equation of motion,

v = u + at

Given,

Acceleration (a) = 2 m s -2

Initial velocity (u) = 0

time (t) = 5 s

Substituting the values in the formula, we get,

v = 0 + 2 × 5 = 10 ms-1

Hence, the velocity acquired = 10 m s-1

(ii) According to the equation of motion

S = ut + 1/2 at2

= 0 × 5 + 1/2 × 2 × 52

= 1/2 × 2 × 52

= 25 m

Hence, distance travelled = 25 m
