Question

Compare between eutrophication and biomagnification on the basis of the following two points:

  • Cause,
  • Effect
WBBSE Class X Life Science 05 (b) Environmental Pollution 02 Mark 2025

Answer

Point Eutrophication Biomagnification
Cause Excess nutrients (mainly nitrates and phosphates) added to water bodies from sewage, fertilizers and detergents increase growth of phytoplankton and algae. Persistent, non‑biodegradable pollutants like DDT, heavy metals enter food chains and are not broken down; they pass from one trophic level to the next.
Effect Dense algal bloom, depletion of dissolved oxygen, death of fish and other aquatic organisms, deterioration of water quality. Progressive increase in concentration of toxin from producers to higher trophic levels, causing physiological and reproductive damage, especially in top consumers and man.
