Question

If the temperature and acidity of sea-water increase what effects would it impose on marine biodiversities?

WBBSE Class X Life Science 05 (c) Environment and Human Population 02 Mark 2025

Answer

Increase of sea‑water temperature reduces dissolved oxygen and disturbs normal metabolic activities of marine organisms, causing mass mortality, coral bleaching and shift of species to cooler areas.

Increase of acidity (lower pH) due to more dissolved CO₂ hampers formation of calcareous shells and skeletons in organisms like corals, molluscs and many planktons, so marine biodiversity and productivity decline.
