QQuestion

What is meant by the electronegativity of an element? How does the electronegativity of Group 1 elements in the long periodic table change from top to bottom? [1+2]

Exam-ready answer 03 Mark

Answer

Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom in a molecule to attract the shared pair of electrons towards itself.

In Group 1, electronegativity decreases from top to bottom. This is because down the group the atomic size increases. The attraction of the nucleus for the shared pair of electrons decreases.

Hence, Li > Na > K > Rb > Cs
