QQuestion
Write how nitric oxide is produced by the oxidation of ammonia with atmospheric oxygen, mentioning the name of the catalyst and the reaction conditions. Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction. [2+1]

✓Answer
In the Ostwald process, ammonia is oxidised by atmospheric oxygen by passing a mixture of ammonia and air over a wired mesh of platinum or platinum–rhodium catalyst at a temperature of 750–900°C (1023–1173 K).
Nitric oxide is formed according to the reaction:
4NH₃ + 5O₂ → 4NO + 6H₂O + Heat
Thus, nitric oxide (NO) is obtained by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia with atmospheric oxygen.
Catalyst: Platinum or platinum–rhodium wired mesh
Temperature: 750–900°C (1023–1173 K)
