Bhagat Singh was an Indian socialist revolutionary who was one of the most influential activists of the Indian independence movement. He was born on September 28, 1907, in Banga, Punjab, British India (now Pakistan). His family had a long history of involvement in revolutionary politics and many of his relatives were active in the Indian independence movement.

Bhagat Singh became involved in the Indian independence movement at a young age and was particularly influenced by the ideas of socialism and the execution of Indian revolutionary, Kartar Singh Sarabha. He was also heavily influenced by the Ghadar movement and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. He advocated for complete independence from British rule and the establishment of a socialist government in India.

In 1928, Singh was involved in the assassination of a British police officer, John Saunders, who Singh and his associates believed was responsible for the death of another Indian revolutionary, Lala Lajpat Rai. Following the assassination, Singh and his associates went underground to evade arrest.

In 1929, he and a group of other revolutionaries decided to translate their anger into action and they planned a bombing in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi. The bomb was intended to be a demonstration against the passing of the Public Safety Bill and the Trade Disputes Bill which would give the government more power to repress political opposition. The bomb threw smoke but caused no damage, they also threw leaflets to publicize their cause, they ran away and were soon arrested.

While in jail, Bhagat Singh and his fellow revolutionaries went on a hunger strike to demand better conditions for political prisoners. Bhagat Singh’s hunger strike and the publicity surrounding it helped to generate public support for the independence movement.

Bhagat Singh and two of his comrades were convicted and sentenced to death for their roles in the bombing and were hanged on March 23, 1931, in Lahore jail. His execution sparked widespread protests and civil unrest across India and he became an iconic figure and a symbol of resistance for the Indian independence movement. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement and is often referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam (the Greatest Martyr) in India. His martyrdom made him a legend and remains an important inspiration for many Indians, who consider him to be a hero of the Indian freedom struggle.
