Goswami Tulsidas was a 16th-century Indian poet, saint, and reformer, who is considered one of the most important figures of the Bhakti movement in North India. He is best known for his most famous work, the Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Hindu epic the Ramayana in the vernacular language of Avadhi, which became one of the most popular versions of the Ramayana in North India.
Tulsidas was born in 1532 in Rajpur, a small village in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. He was initiated into the path of devotion at an early age and spent most of his life in devotion and service to Lord Rama.
Tulsidas’s major work, the Ramcharitmanas, which is considered to be his magnum opus, was written in Avadhi, an eastern dialect of Hindi. It is a retelling of the Hindu epic Ramayana and is considered one of the greatest works of Indian literature. It is a combination of poetry and prose, and its stories and characters are designed to inspire and teach moral values to common people in a language they can understand.
Tulsidas’s teachings emphasized the importance of devotion, simplicity, and selfless service. He stressed the importance of devotion to God and the power of the name of God as the highest form of worship. He also spoke out against caste discrimination, superstition and advocated for the equality of all human beings.
Tulsidas passed away in 1623, and his samadhi, or tomb, is located in the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, which is considered a place of pilgrimage and devotion by millions of his followers. His works and teachings continue to be widely read and followed to this day, and his Ramcharitmanas is still considered one of the most important texts of the Bhakti tradition in North India.
