Charles Darwin first used the term “struggle for existence” in his 1859 book “On the Origin of Species.” He used the term to describe the competition between organisms for limited resources, such as food, space, and mates. He argued that this competition led to natural selection, which is the process by which organisms with advantageous traits are more likely to survive and reproduce.
