Charles Darwin
Explanation
Charles Darwin, an English naturalist, proposed the theory of natural selection in his 1859 book “On the Origin of Species.” He observed that organisms within a species vary in their traits, and that some of these traits are heritable, meaning that they can be passed on from parents to offspring. He also observed that there is a struggle for existence among organisms, and that only a small proportion of offspring survive to reproduce.
