Thyagaraja was born in a small village in South India. Since his childhood, he had an attraction toward devotion to God. He composed devotional verses and set them to music. His popularity spread to the kings of the South as a great devotional poet and musician. The kings of Tanjavur and Travancore invited him to their courts but Thyagaraja did not wish to be a court musician. He was of the view that art cannot be weighed in money, nor can it be compensated by it. He politely declined these offers and chose to remain a commoner devoted to his art.

What distinguishes Thyagaraja in the field of poetry is his special sound effect which revolutionized Karnatic music. He composed 700 verses and set them to music in 500 different ragas. The eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries are significant in the annals of Indian music because of him.

It is obvious from saint Thyagaraja’s devotion to music that he was fully dedicated to his art. He was, indeed, an ancient ascetic in commune with the Divine Being. He was a devotee of Lord Rama. What he achieved in the field of music was not achieved by his predecessors of the fame of Tansen, Baiju Bawra, and others who are known for their devotion ‘to music. Tansen and Baiju Bawra are remembered for their contribution to music, likewise, Thyagaraja will always be remembered for his valuable contribution to Karnatic music.

Known as “Sangeet-Guru” Thyagaraja is one of those precious gems of Indian music who set aside the lure of the court for the devotion of the muses.
