Jawaharlal Nehru was an Indian statesman and political leader who served as the first Prime Minister of India from 1947 until his death in 1964. He was a central figure in Indian politics before and after independence and is considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic.

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad, British India. He was the son of a wealthy lawyer and served as a lawyer himself before turning to politics. Nehru was educated in England and trained as a barrister.

In the 1920s, he became actively involved in the Indian independence movement, serving as a member of the Indian National Congress, a political party that was at the forefront of the movement. He was a close ally of Mahatma Gandhi and was arrested several times by the British government for his political activities.

After India gained independence in 1947, Nehru was appointed as the first Prime Minister of India. During his tenure, he implemented policies aimed at promoting economic development, reducing poverty, and improving education and healthcare. He also played a key role in shaping India’s foreign policy and was a leading voice in the Non-Aligned Movement, which sought to remain neutral in the Cold War.

Nehru’s policies were generally left-leaning and focused on socialism. He played a critical role in shaping India’s domestic and foreign policy which were the cornerstone of the country’s development and stability in the post-independence era. Nehru’s government also established many institutions and set up policies that continue to influence India’s growth and development to this day such as the establishment of the Planning Commission, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)

Nehru died in office on May 27, 1964, his death was a great loss to the nation. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Indian history and his legacy continues to shape India’s politics and society to this day.
