B.R. Ambedkar, also known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was a prominent Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer who fought for the rights of the Dalit (“untouchable”) community in India. He was born in 1891 in a small village in Central Provinces, British India, now Madhya Pradesh, India and he belonged to Dalit community himself.
Ambedkar received a scholarship to study at Columbia University in New York City, where he earned a PhD in economics. He later went on to study at the London School of Economics and the University of Bombay, where he obtained a degree in law. After returning to India, he worked as a lawyer and a political activist, focusing on the rights of the Dalit community and other marginalized groups in Indian society.
In 1935, Ambedkar was appointed as an independent member of the Executive Council of the Governor of Bombay, he played an important role in drafting the Indian Constitution, in which he advocated for the rights of the Dalit and other marginalized communities. He is considered as the principal architect of Indian Constitution.
In addition to his work on the Indian Constitution, Ambedkar also advocated for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized groups through his political activism and writing. He also fought against caste discrimination and advocated for the rights of women and workers.
Ambedkar passed away in 1956, but his legacy and ideas continue to be influential in India and around the world. He is remembered as an important figure in the struggle against caste discrimination and social inequality in India and as a champion of the rights of Dalits and other marginalized groups.
He is also remembered as a social reformer, educationist and one of the most important thinker of Indian democracy. He’s also known as “Father of Indian Constitution” as well as “Father of Indian democracy”. His birthday 14 April is celebrated as “Ambedkar Jayanti” as a national holiday in India.
