Amrita Pritam was a prominent Indian novelist, writer, and essayist, known for her feminist perspective and her contributions to Punjabi literature. She was born on August 31, 1919, in Gujranwala, Punjab, British India, and passed away on November 13, 2005.
Pritam began writing at a young age and published her first novel, Amrita Pritam, at the age of 16. Throughout her career, she wrote over 100 books, including novels, short stories, and essays. She wrote primarily in Punjabi, but also in Hindi and Urdu.
Pritam’s writing often dealt with the struggles of women and the marginalization of certain communities, and her work was known for its feminist perspective. She was one of the first female Punjabi writers to gain recognition in India. Some of her famous works include Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu (Today I Invoke Waris Shah), Pinjar (The Skeleton), and Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu (Today I Invoke Waris Shah) which is considered one of the most important novels in Punjabi literature.
In 1981, Pritam was awarded the Padma Shri, a civilian award from the Government of India, and in 1983 she received the Padma Bhushan, a higher civilian award. In 2004 she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.
She was also the recipient of numerous literary awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award for her magnum opus Pinjar in 1956, which was later adapted into a critically acclaimed film. Her writings are still widely read and celebrated across India and considered as an important literature in Punjabi and Indian literature.
