Jayaprakash Narayan, commonly referred to as JP or Loknayak, was a freedom fighter, social reformer, and political leader in India. He was born in a small village in Bihar, India on October 11, 1902, and died on October 8, 1979.
Narayan was actively involved in the Indian independence movement, and was arrested several times by British authorities for his activities. After India gained independence in 1947, he became a leader in the Indian National Congress, the country’s dominant political party at the time.
However, he later became disillusioned with politics and the Congress party, and in the 1950s and 1960s, he became a vocal critic of the Indian government and advocated for greater political and economic decentralization.
In 1974, he led the “Total Revolution” Movement, which aimed to bring about a “total transformation” of Indian society and politics. This was a non-violent civil disobedience movement against the government of Prime minister Indira Gandhi, which led to the fall of the Prime minister and the declaration of Emergency in 1975.
Narayan’s work and ideas had a significant impact on Indian politics and society, and he is often considered one of the most important figures in modern Indian history.
