Dalai Lama has been the traditional spiritual and religious ruler of Tibet which is considered the roof of the world. Tibetans are basically Buddhists with a penchant for peace and are steeped in religion. The present Dalai Lama is the fourteenth spiritual head in the series of Lamas who held this position. His real name is Tenjin Gyatso. He was born in the village Takche on July 6, 1935. He was also selected as Dalai Lama in the conventional method, as it is believed each Dalai Lama reincarnates himself. A body of priests searches for the auspicious signs amongst children and declares the selected one as the new Dalai Lama. He is then imparted education and training for assuming the oath of austerity.

Dalai Lama is supposed to be a symbol of love for humanity, peace, non-violence, self-respect, and universal brotherhood. He is looked upon with respect not only by Tibetans but people all over the world for his compassion and erudition.

It was in 1950 that China started interfering in the affairs of Tibet claiming it to be part of China. Chinese army indulged in large-scale bloodshed to subdue the freedom-loving people of Tibet. Their ancient customs and heritage were systematically destroyed. Dalai Lama felt that even his life was insecure in Laos which eventually made him flee to India in 1959. The Government of India provided refuge to him and he is now living at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh with thousands of his devotees.

China has slaughtered over a million Tibetans and destroyed thousands of their monasteries. Dalai Lama wants to keep alive the literature, art, medicine, and distinct identity of Tibetans in our country. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1984 as also Leopold Lucas Award. He has been preaching the universal message of peace and love to the world for the past three decades. His book Kindness, Clarity, and Insight was published in 1984.
