Dhyan Chand, full name Dhyan Singh, was an Indian field hockey player who is considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He was born on August 29, 1905 in Allahabad, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India).
Dhyan Chand began playing field hockey at a young age and quickly made a name for himself as a talented player. He joined the Indian Army in 1922 and that helped him to sharpen his skills and fitness. He made his international debut for India in 1926 and went on to represent India in three Olympic Games: Amsterdam 1928, Los Angeles 1932, and Berlin 1936.
Dhyan Chand is considered one of the greatest players in the history of field hockey, and is known for his exceptional ball control and goal-scoring abilities. He was often referred to as the “Wizard” for his skills on the field. He captained the Indian team that won the gold medals at the 1928 and 1936 Olympics. He also won 3 Olympic gold medals and scored more than 400 goals in his international career.
Dhyan Chand was also an exemplary sportsman, he had a great humility towards the game and his teammates. He was given the award of “Padma Bhushan” by the Government of India in 1956 and in 2012, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) included him in their list of “greatest hockey players of all time”. He passed away on December 3, 1979 in Delhi, India.
