Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India, serving from 1964 until his death in 1966. He was born in Mughalsarai, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India) on October 2, 1904, and was the son of Sharada Prasad Srivastava and Ramdulari Devi. He joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s, and was arrested and imprisoned several times for his participation in anti-British protests and activities.
Shastri was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and served in various roles in the Indian National Congress, including as the General Secretary of the party. After India gained independence in 1947, he served in various cabinet positions under Nehru, including as the Minister of Transport and Communications, and the Minister of Home Affairs.
In 1964, after the death of Nehru, Shastri became the Prime Minister of India. During his tenure, he oversaw the successful completion of the Green Revolution, which greatly increased food grain production in India, and helped to alleviate the country’s chronic food shortages. He also led India during the 1965 India-Pakistan War.
One of his most memorable speeches was “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” which motivate the farmers and soldiers at the same time.
He died on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, Soviet Union (now in Uzbekistan), where he had gone to sign a peace treaty with Pakistan to end the 1965 India-Pakistan War. He passed due to a heart attack, cause still remain unclear, His death was a great shock for the nation and his death remains an enigma, shrouded in mystery.
