Lal Krishna Advani is an Indian politician and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India, as well as the Minister of Home Affairs and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament).
Advani was born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, British India (now in Pakistan). He began his political career as a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, and later joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In the 1980s, Advani played a key role in the rise of the BJP, and he served as the party’s president from 1986 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1998. He is widely credited with transforming the BJP from a marginal political party into a major force in Indian politics.
In the late 1990s, he led the BJP’s campaign for the 1998 Indian general elections and later served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs in the Government of India under the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Advani also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009 and he was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister again in 2014.
Advani is one of the most senior and influential leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he has a significant role in shaping the party’s ideology and program. However, he has retired from active politics in recent years, but he continues to be a respected figure in Indian politics and is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of the BJP.
