Mokshagundam was India’s leading Engineer. He helped in building many dams and bridges in the country after independence.
Soft-spoken, gentle and efficient, Vishwesharayya can easily be termed the builder of modem India if one were to refer to the construction work he undertook. He worked towards the benefit of the country with complete devotion.
Vishwesharayya also worked for the Nizam of Mysore and was the inspiration behind Mysore University. He can be credited with having. given a modern look to many of our cities. His selfless devotion earned him knighthood (the title ‘Sir’) during the British raj. He was honoured with “Bharat Ratna” after independence.
Dr Mokshagundam Vishwesharayya was born on 15 September 1861 at Mudanhalli in Karnataka. His parents were poor. After completing his B.A. from Bangalore Central College, he joined Engineering and passed it in 1883 with high marks. He also travelled extensively in Europe. He showed his administrative ability in every field wherever he was posted. He was highly appreciative of the Japanese and their progress impressed him. He died in the year 1962 of old age.
Dr Vishwesharayya has left an indelible mark on the nation. His birth anniversary is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm.
