Mahavir Swami, also known as Vardhamana, was the 24th and last Tirthankara (a spiritual teacher and leader) of Jainism. He is considered to be the founder of the Jain religion, and is believed to have lived in the 6th century BCE.
Mahavir was born into a royal family in the kingdom of Videha, in present-day Bihar, India. At the age of 30, he abandoned his privileged life to become an ascetic, and spent the next 12 years in deep meditation and spiritual practice. He attained enlightenment, known as kevala jnana, and spent the rest of his life teaching the principles of Jainism to others.
Mahavir’s teachings emphasized non-violence, compassion, and the belief in the innate spiritual potential of every living being. He taught that the ultimate goal of human existence is to attain liberation of the soul, or moksha, from the cycle of rebirth. He also taught the importance of leading a life of non-attachment and self-control.
Mahavir’s teachings and principles were written down by his followers and became the basis of Jain scriptures. He is revered as a spiritual teacher by the Jain community and the followers of Jainism. He attained the ultimate liberation, known as Nirvana or moksha, on the 15th day of the bright half of the moon in the month of Chaitra(may be equivalent to march-April) and today is celebrated as Mahavir Jayanti, the birthday of Mahavir.
