Indira Gandhi was an Indian politician and stateswoman who served as the Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was the first and to date the only female Prime Minister of India.

Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, British India, the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. She was educated in India and later in Europe and was a member of the Indian National Congress party, which was led by her father.

She began her political career in the 1940s, serving as an assistant to her father and later as a member of the Indian parliament. In 1959, she was appointed as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the government of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

After the death of Nehru in 1964, Indira Gandhi served as the President of the Indian National Congress and in 1966, she was elected as the Prime Minister of India. During her tenure, she implemented policies aimed at reducing poverty, improving education and healthcare, and promoting industrialization.

She also played a key role in shaping India’s foreign policy, particularly with respect to its relationships with the Soviet Union and the United States. She also played a key role in the formation of Bangladesh in 1971, India was on the support side of the Bengali rebels against Pakistan which led to the war and creation of Bangladesh as a separate state.

In 1975, Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, which allowed her to rule by decree, suspended civil liberties, and resulted in widespread human rights abuses. This led to widespread public unrest and was one of the factors that led to her defeat in the 1977 elections.

However, she returned to power in 1980 and remained Prime Minister until her assassination in 1984 by her own bodyguards. Her death was a great shock to the nation and she is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in Indian politics.
