Ravi Shankar was an Indian musician, and a leading exponent of the sitar, a stringed instrument used in classical Indian music. He was born on April 7, 1920 in Varanasi, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India), and was widely considered one of the greatest sitar players of the 20th century.
Shankar began his musical career as a child, and by the age of 10, he was already a seasoned performer. He studied Indian classical music under the tutelage of Ustad Allauddin Khan, who was a well-known musician and teacher at the time. He continued to study and perform music throughout his life, and became a leading figure in the Indian classical music scene.
Shankar is also known for his work in popularizing Indian classical music in the West, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. He performed and collaborated with many notable Western musicians of that era, such as George Harrison, Yehudi Menuhin and Philip Glass. He was also actively involved in promoting the cause of Indian music and culture around the world through his concerts and teaching.
In recognition of his contributions to music, Shankar was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1999, and in 2001 he received the “Living Legend” award from the U.S. Library of Congress. He was also nominated 14 times for the Grammy awards and won three. He passed away on December 11, 2012, in San Diego, California, United States.
